Pruning That Keeps Shade Trees Standing
Tree trimming and pruning is the work that lets a big tree stay. In Boise, where summer shade is worth a lot and most mature trees grew on irrigation, the aim is usually to keep as much healthy canopy as possible while taking out the parts most likely to fail: dead branches, cracked limbs, crossing branches that rub, and heavy ends reaching over a roof. Good pruning removes less than people expect. Boise's own tree care guidance says never to remove more than a quarter of a tree's crown in a season, and to cut large branches just outside the branch collar without leaving a stub.
Trimming versus pruning
People use the words interchangeably, and so do we on the phone. Strictly, trimming is about size, shape and clearance, and pruning targets dead, diseased and structurally weak wood. On a typical Boise job we do both: clearing a branch off the roof, raising the canopy over the driveway, and taking out the dead wood high in the crown that falls on windy days.
Kinds of pruning we do
Crown cleaning removes dead, dying and broken branches. Thinning takes out selected live branches to cut weight and let wind pass through, without changing the tree's outline. Raising lifts the lower canopy for clearance over sidewalks, driveways and the street. Reduction shortens long limbs back to a smaller branch that can take over, which is the right way to lower a tree's height or pull it back from a house. Structural pruning on young trees picks one main leader and spaces the side branches, which prevents the tight, weak forks that split years later. All of these follow the ANSI A300 pruning standard, which is the national standard for tree care.
Why we will not top a tree
Topping, cutting the main stems back to stubs, is the most common bad request we hear. It forces a flush of fast, weakly attached sprouts, starves the tree of the leaves it needs, and opens big wounds that decay. A topped tree ends up taller, denser and more dangerous within a few years. If a tree is too big for its spot, reduction cuts or removal are the honest options.
Heat, water and timing
With roughly 55 days a year at 90 degrees or more, Boise summers are hard on trees, and a heavy pruning in July adds stress to a tree that is already short of water. Late winter, while deciduous trees are dormant, suits most structural work. Dead wood can come out any time. If your yard has recently lost irrigation or been regraded, tell us; it changes how much we would take off.
Street trees and power lines
If the tree is in Boise's right-of-way, routine pruning is your responsibility, done under a free city permit by a city-licensed tree service. Branches near Idaho Power lines are the utility's to clear; Idaho Power asks people never to prune near a line themselves.
What We Handle
Each pruning job is written up by tree, with the type of cut and the goal.
Crown cleaning
Dead, broken, rubbing and diseased branches removed throughout the canopy.
Crown thinning
Selected live branches removed to cut weight and wind resistance while keeping shade.
Crown raising
Low limbs removed for clearance over sidewalks, driveways, the street and the house.
Crown reduction
Long limbs shortened to smaller branches to pull a tree back from a roof or lower its height.
Young tree structure
One leader chosen and branches spaced on trees in newer subdivisions so they grow strong.

How We Do It
1. Walk the tree
We look at the whole crown, the trunk flare and what you want the pruning to achieve.
2. Agree the cuts
The quote names the type of pruning and the main limbs involved, so there are no surprises.
3. Prune
Cuts made at the branch collar, heavy pieces lowered on ropes, nothing topped.
4. Site cleanup
Brush chipped, chips left or hauled, lawn and beds cleared.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How much does tree trimming cost in Boise?
HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put most trimming between about $400 and $900 per tree, from around $250 for small trees to $2,500 or more for very large or neglected ones. Height, how much wood comes out, and access drive the price. We quote after seeing the tree.
How often should a mature shade tree be pruned?
Many mature trees do well with a cleaning every three to five years, with dead or broken wood removed whenever it appears. Young trees benefit from lighter structural pruning more often in their first years. Fast-growing trees near roofs may need clearance pruning more frequently.
Can you make my tree shorter?
Within limits, by reduction pruning: shortening limbs back to side branches big enough to take over. That keeps the tree's form and health. We will not top it, because topping causes weak regrowth and decay. If a tree needs to lose much more than a quarter of its crown, removal may be the better choice.
Do I need a permit to prune the tree by the street?
If it is in the public right-of-way, yes. Boise issues a free permit for a homeowner to hire a city-licensed tree service to prune right-of-way trees. Trees on your own lot do not need a city pruning permit.
